Short Bio / Artistic Career
João Pedro Oliveira is a Portuguese composer and visual-music artist who holds the Corwin Endowed Chair in Composition at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His interdisciplinary education includes studies in architecture, organ performance, music theory, and composition, culminating in a Ph.D. in Music from Stony Brook University. His work encompasses instrumental and orchestral music, opera, electroacoustic and acousmatic composition, and experimental video and visual music. His music and audiovisual work have been presented internationally and have received more than seventy prizes and distinctions, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Giga-Hertz Award, and the American Prize in Composition. Throughout his career, his artistic research has focused particularly on musical gesture, timbre, spatialization, electroacoustic transformation, and the relationships between sound and moving image.

Artistic Statement
My artistic practice explores sound as a dynamic material capable of generating gesture, space, movement, tension, memory, and visual imagination. I am particularly interested in the ways acoustic, electroacoustic, and visual materials can be transformed and placed in relationships in which their boundaries become unstable. My background in architecture has had an important influence on the way I think about composition. I often conceive a work as a space that can be constructed, transformed, traversed, fragmented, or continuously reorganized. Musical events establish distances, trajectories, densities, perspectives, and points of tension, creating what might be described as architectures for listening.
In my audiovisual work, I generally avoid treating image as an illustration of music or sound as accompaniment to image. Instead, I search for an organic relationship in which both media emerge from related ideas of gesture, energy, texture, transformation, and temporal behavior. My interest lies precisely in the intermediate territory where we are no longer certain whether we are hearing an image or seeing a sound. Technology is therefore not simply a means of production. It becomes a space for experimentation and transformation—a way of extending perception and confronting the listener or viewer with environments that could not exist in ordinary physical reality. Memory, dreams, spirituality, nature, machines, and imaginary spaces recur throughout my work because they all involve transitions between what is visible and invisible, material and immaterial, remembered and invented.


GENERAL CONTEXT AND PRACTICE
1. Your interdisciplinary training spans organ performance, architecture, and a Ph.D. in Music, culminating in your role as the Corwin Endowed Chair in Composition at UC Santa Barbara. How does this deep knowledge of structural physics (architecture) and temporal physics (electroacoustic music) dictate the way you compose visual spatialities in your experimental video art?
Architecture has profoundly influenced the way I understand composition. I do not think of a musical or audiovisual work only as a sequence of events in time, but also as the construction of a space. In architecture, we create structures, establish proportions, control densities and openings, determine paths, and decide what will be visible from a particular position. I find many parallels with musical composition. Electroacoustic music expands this possibility because sound itself can create an imaginary architecture. A sound can approach or recede, occupy a large or extremely confined space, circulate around the listener, disappear into the distance, or suddenly become almost physically present. In visual music, these spatial properties can migrate between sound and image. I therefore tend to construct audiovisual works as changing environments rather than sequences of images accompanied by music. Layers can open and close, dimensions can expand, perspectives can collapse, and gestures can lead the listener-viewer through different perceptual spaces. The resulting architecture is impossible in physical reality because it can continuously transform according to musical time. Walls and objects can dissolve, distances can suddenly contract, and an entire environment can emerge from a single gesture. Architectural concepts provide me with a model for organizing space; electroacoustic music provides the possibility of making that space fluid.

2. With a highly celebrated global career including over 70 international prizes and the Guggenheim Fellowship, your research heavily incorporates electroacoustic and acousmatic music paradigms. In what ways do you believe that sound, rather than light or pixels, acts as the primary sensory interface capable of shifting human consciousness?
Sound has a particular capacity to surround us and penetrate our perception. We can close our eyes and interrupt visual information, but sound continues to establish a relationship between the body and the surrounding space. It is temporal, physical, and spatial simultaneously. In my audiovisual works, image and sound have an equivalent role in the compositional process. I do not consider one to be subordinate to, or illustrative of, the other. Instead, they develop through a dialectical relationship in which each medium continuously influences, questions, reinforces, or contradicts the other. Visual forms, textures, movements, and spatial configurations interact with sonic gestures, energies, densities, timbres, and trajectories, creating a unified audiovisual discourse. What interests me is the tension and exchange created between the two media. At certain moments, sound may clarify or intensify a visual gesture; at others, the image may redefine the way a sound is perceived. They may converge, diverge, contradict one another, or temporarily exchange perceptual functions. The audiovisual composition emerges from this constant negotiation. Rather than sound simply destabilizing the image, or the image directing the interpretation of sound, each becomes a means of transforming the perception of the other.

REGARDING THE ARTWORKS
1. In Things I Have Seen in My Dreams (2019), you collect and create variations on memory fragments from your subconscious, noting that some dreams project images and sounds of great beauty. Conceptualizing the dreaming mind as the ultimate biological interface, how does translating internal, ephemeral dreamscapes into a fixed digital video medium impact their original psychic nature?
Things I Have Seen in My Dreams begins with images that I remember from my dreams. I try to recreate some of these images as closely as possible, while recognizing that dream memories are always partial and unstable. What remains after waking may be a fragment of a space, a movement, a color, a sound, an atmosphere, or a particular visual situation. These recollections become the starting material for the work. From these remembered images, I then create variations, transformations, and extrapolations. A visual fragment may be extended into a larger environment, repeated with modifications, combined with other remembered elements, or developed in directions that were not necessarily present in the original dream. The work therefore moves between recollection and invention. Some passages attempt to remain close to what I remember, while others explore what those remembered images might become through artistic transformation.
The fixed digital medium inevitably stabilizes something that was originally fluid and ephemeral. A dream image that existed only briefly in memory becomes repeatable and precisely defined. At the same time, the compositional process reintroduces instability through variation, transformation, and recombination. The result is therefore neither a literal record nor simply an abstract response to dreaming. It is an attempt to reconstruct certain images (and sounds) I have seen (and heard) in dreams and, from those recollections, create new visual and sonic possibilities. The original dream becomes a point of departure for a broader imaginative space in which memory and invention continuously interact.

2. The audio-visual composition in Things I Have Seen in My Dreams relies on mnemonic recollections. How does the technical synthesis of electroacoustic soundscapes serve to bridge the gap between human memory and the clinical digital storage of data?
There is an interesting contradiction between digital storage and human memory. Digital storage aspires to exact repetition: theoretically, the same data can be retrieved without alteration. Human memory behaves almost in the opposite way. Every act of remembering is also an act of reconstruction. Electroacoustic transformation allows me to introduce this instability into the digital medium. Sounds can be filtered, fragmented, granulated, stretched, layered, resonated, or transformed until their original identity becomes uncertain. A sound may retain only a trace of what it once was. That resembles the way memories operate: sometimes we remember a contour, an atmosphere, a gesture, or an emotion much more clearly than the event itself. The computer therefore functions simultaneously as an extremely precise storage mechanism and as an instrument capable of producing instability. I am interested in exploiting this paradox. Instead of using technology simply to preserve a memory, I use it to recreate the processes of erosion, association, displacement, and transformation through which memory becomes meaningful.

3. Your 2025 video work, Machinarium, presents a journey through an imaginary city of machines, where mechanisms seem to think and structures begin to breathe. Does this blur the line between organic life and industrial artifacts, suggesting a symbiotic evolution of the self, or does it hint at our complete absorption by systemic machinic structures?
I prefer to leave that question deliberately unresolved. The ambiguity is fundamental to the work. The machines gradually acquire characteristics that we normally associate with living organisms. They breathe, pulse, respond, grow, and seem to possess internal processes that we cannot completely understand. At the same time, their architecture begins to surround and determine the path taken by the observer. We are therefore confronted with two simultaneous possibilities: the machine is becoming organic, but the organic is also machinic. This ambiguity reflects our contemporary relationship with technological systems. We construct machines as extensions of ourselves, but those systems subsequently transform our behavior, perception, communication, memory, and even our concepts of creativity and intelligence. It becomes increasingly difficult to identify where one ends and the other begins. 

4. In Machinarium, you describe layers of image and sound interlocking like gears. When audio frequencies and moving textures are seamlessly bound together by digital architecture, does the resulting synesthesia simulate a collective machinic consciousness, or does it preserve the individual human ghost inside the machine?
The interlocking structures of Machinarium certainly suggest the operation of a larger system. Individual gestures are connected to other gestures, sounds activate visual responses, textures propagate across the screen, and what initially appears to be a collection of independent mechanisms gradually begins to reveal a journey inside a large scale single mechanical organism, a little bit like some of Piranesi’s proposals for the Carceri d’Invenzioni. The audiovisual system is highly constructed, and behind its apparent autonomy remain numerous subjective decisions concerning proportion, tension, timing, transformation, beauty or ugliness, instability, and surprise. The "ghost" therefore remains present, although it may no longer occupy the center. I am interested in the moment when authorship becomes distributed across several layers: human intention, computational processes, audiovisual material, and the perceptual activity of the spectator.

INTERSECTION WITH THE THEME: "THE SELF AS INTERFACE"
1. By treating the screen as a fluid junction where human biological dreams (Things I Have Seen in My Dreams) confront synthetic cybernetic architectures (Machinarium), your practice presents two distinct sides of technological mediation. How do these opposing forces inform our understanding of the post-digital self?
I see the two worlds less as opposites than as two movements across the same boundary, or two faces of the same coin. Things I Have Seen in My Dreams begins within the biological references, with images and sounds emerging from dreams and memory and then passing through technological processes. Machinarium moves in the opposite direction, beginning with a synthetic environment that gradually acquires organic, emotional, or seemingly biological behaviors. In both cases, the boundary between human and technological becomes unstable. Gibson’s concept of affordances is useful here: digital tools offer possibilities for transformation, variation, combination, and reconfiguration that actively shape the creative process. Technology is therefore not simply a neutral medium, but part of a continuous negotiation between intention, perception, memory, and the possibilities offered by the system. This may be one of the defining conditions of the post-digital self: technology is no longer external to us, but increasingly participates in how we imagine, remember, create, perceive, and construct identity.
The "self as interface" is therefore particularly meaningful to me because an interface is not simply a boundary separating two entities. It is a place where information is translated and transformed, a continuously changing field of exchanges between memory, body, environment, technology, and imagination.

2. When presenting electroacoustic video art within a virtual, immersive 3D gallery environment such as Galeria 5ª ao Sul, the screen becomes a multi-layered site of transmission. What active cognitive dialogue or perceptual friction do you hope to trigger in a visitor navigating your complex, simulated environments?
I would like the spectator to move beyond the idea of the screen as a window through which an artwork is simply observed. In a virtual gallery, there are already several simultaneous spaces: the physical space occupied by the spectator, the simulated architecture of the gallery, the spatial world suggested by the screen, and the much more ambiguous spaces created by sound. When these layers interact, interesting contradictions become possible. A visual object may appear distant while its sound seems extremely close. A screen may have a clearly defined physical position inside the virtual gallery, while the electroacoustic space seems to exceed its boundaries completely. The visitor is continuously negotiating between these different spatial realities. Ideally, navigating these works becomes a form of listening and thinking rather than passive viewing.
